2006 WPA World Artistic Pool Championships hosted by Ty Wilson & Greg Asproth owners of
Two Stooges Sports Bar & Grill in Fridley, Minnesota What a beautiful room with a 14 foot HD big screen TV, full service restaurant, 8 league electronic dart boards 14 plasma TV's and two pinball machines, 43 pool tables, and in the center of this massive pool room was a bar that could easily seat 100 patrons comfortably. It takes a lot of hard work and many dedicated individuals to pull off a tournament of this magnitude and at the center of this work was an individual I'm glad to call a friend, Patrick Morrow. This man worked tirelessly making sure that the players, the spectator's, the staff and everybody were having the time of their lives. Patrick, mission accomplished buddy. I'd also like to thank the volunteers who gave of themselves and who may have sacrificed some points on the scoreboard. Nate Bryant President of the WPA-APD (World Pool & Billiard Association-Artistic Pool Division) and the WPA for a spectacular event, Nate is a great guy -- more on him below, Mark Dimick, back to back two time World Jump Champion and the only living creature to make all seven wing shots twice in a tournament (2005 WPA World Championships hosted at Shooters Billiards in Southington CT.). Mark also Officially Refereed at the inaugural ESPN World Cup of Trick Shots Team Championships, (they dressed him for that one), scheduled to be TV released January 8, 2007 (Please check at www.poolmag.com -- TV Schedule for exact schedule) I think of Mark as our poster child, he's one of our sharpest dressed players on the tour and he carries himself with such dignity. With this man's most impressive and documented feats on the green felt and under the greatest pressure this sport has to offer it shouldn't be long before you'll get to see him where he belongs, in front of ESPN's cameras. After the player's meeting on Thursday night, Mark and Paul Danno began gridding the tables. In our sport we draw lines on the cloth of the table for the various shots. This helps to ensure that the book shot I shoot is the same for all the players and with so many incredible shots, serves to cut down setup time. At any rate, gridding the tables is a long and meticulous job, one of our sports greatest supporters and owner of Hippo's House of Billiards in Yorkville, NY and an all around sweetheart of a man is Victor Conti. Victor is one of our unsung hero's Victor usually comes in and grid's the tables for us but on this occasion business just wouldn't permit it. However, he sent us one of the templates he had made up to cut down the gridding time. Thank you Victor for all you do to help make our sport so special. Paul Danno. If you have the good fortune to attend one of our events make it a point to meet Paul. Paul and his wife Elaine are the dearest people in the world. I hold a special place in my heart for Paul and his wife. Paul is the first BCA Certified Instructor for the state of New Jersey and a Great shooter. Paul's one of those guy's you ask for help and he's right there for you. We later found out that Paul's wife Elaine had a touch of the flu and Paul rescheduled his flight and tended to Elaine, God love you and keep you both. Mark and Paul had been gridding the tables for hour's and even with Victor's template it is a long process so both Tom Rossman and Nate Bryant ("Okinawa Slim") asked Dave Nangle if he could help them out and Dave being Dave said of course I'll help. Dave is a special part of our sport and a "heck" of a guy, at his first event the 2005 Allen Hopkins Billiard Expo Artistic Pool Masters someone gave him the nick name of "Super Dave". I think it's because Dave look's a little like Superman in his Clark Kent disguise and his first name is Dave, I never liked that nick name for Dave on account Super Dave was a bumbling fool and Dave's no bumbling fool. I call him Shaky because Dave has a little shake to him, when I fist watched him setting up a shot I remember thinking boy this guy's going to have a rough go of it unless he relaxes a little, I thought he was like real nervous, I then had the good fortune to watch his match, he was still shaky but he was making the shots I think he took 15th place and scored at that time the highest first tournament score of 127. I'm proud to call Dave friend. They didn't get finished gridding the tables till I think it was 2:30 a.m. with the first round set to go off at 9:00 a.m. Jason Lynch and new comer Eric Yow volunteered as tournament commentators helping keep the spectator's on the edge of there seats and letting them get involved with the intensity of this fine sport, Jason is the Vice President of the WPA-APD. Eric come in third place and won the Masse Discipline not bad for a new comer. A couple more finishes like that and you could be looking for Eric on ESPN Trick Shot Magic, in the next couple of years. Tom and Marty Rossman, you may recognize Tom as Dr.Cue but you may not know Marty we affectionately call her Ms. Cue There is no way the Artistic Pool Movement would be where it is today without these two individuals. I have not been apart of an Artistic pool event without these to helping in any way asked, from tournament preparations, running of the tournament as well as follow up. Nobody has put more heart and soul time and money into the Artistic Pool Crusade then these two. Sometimes we forget to be thankful for the good things we have in life, for instance when's the last time you walked into a dark room reached over and flipped the light-switch on and thought wow how fortunate I am to have light in the dark, we tend to take things for granted. with all the love in the world I send a big thank you, to both Tom and Marty Rossman, The Crusade Lives On. I apologize to Marty, she prefers to be kept out of the spotlight but so many are so thankful for all you do. Big things do come in small packages. Tom took fist place to become the 2006 WPA World Artistic Pool Champion. I can't wait to see his new cue case cover with the title of World Champion on it. Tom is our fourth World Champion since the inception of the WPA World Artistic Pool Championships in 2000. A long over due and well deserved victory. to Tom and Marty, (our electricity) Congratulations and love always. Nate Bryant played a big roll in the success of this most prestigious event, coordinating with the venue to make this event very special, on top of awarding medals for the top finishers of the eight disciplines we also award (by player vote) a sportsmanship award this honor went to Nate Bryant, as he was voted as having exhibited the most professional image and demeanor. McDermott Cue donated 5 specially made cue's to the event, one of which was designated to the Sportsmanship award winner, Nate called to the front a member of the audience he knew to be recently diagnosed with cancer. Melting everyone’s heart, Nate showed why he deserved the award when he presented the cue to the fan and friend.
